Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division have successfully destroyed illegal oil refining sites in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, as part of their ongoing crackdown on economic sabotage in the country’s oil sector. This operation marks another significant stride in the government’s efforts to curb the illegal activities that gravely affect Nigeria’s economy.

On August 23, 2023, the troops acted on actionable intelligence and swiftly moved in to dismantle the illegal oil refinery sites located in Ogbokoko and Atu. Their operation resulted in the destruction of eight active ovens, which were being used for the illegal refining of stolen crude oil. Additionally, 14 storage reservoirs containing an estimated 200,000 liters of stolen crude oil and 90,000 liters of locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were seized and disposed of.

The criminals engaged in these illicit activities managed to escape upon spotting the advancing troops. Nevertheless, the Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, is actively investigating the incident and pursuing the fleeing criminals. This unyielding approach and commitment to tackling economic sabotage demonstrates the government’s determination to restore law and order in the oil sector, which is crucial for the overall progress and development of Nigeria.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, commended the troops for their decisive action, emphasizing the importance of their continued efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s resources. He also appealed to the public to cooperate and report any suspicious activities to the relevant security agencies. Enhanced vigilance from citizens can greatly contribute to the overall success of ongoing operations against economic sabotage, fostering a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.

The destruction of these illegal oil refining sites highlights the Nigerian Army’s commitment to eradicating illegal practices that drain the nation’s economic resources and impede its progress. The government’s steadfast approach, backed by the dedicated efforts of the armed forces, aims to create a conducive environment for responsible and sustainable development in the country’s oil sector.

By prioritizing the crackdown on economic sabotage, the Nigerian Army and its partners are taking a critical step towards restoring the integrity of Nigeria’s oil industry. Their resolute actions will ultimately contribute to the nation’s economic growth, stability, and the overall welfare of its citizens, safeguarding the valuable resources that rightfully belong to the Nigerian people.
