The Nigerian Army has confirmed the tragic killing of soldiers in a bandit ambush that occurred in Niger State. According to reports, at least 21 soldiers and an unspecified number of bandits lost their lives during a gunfight in the Kundu community near Zungeru in Wushishi local government area.
Although the Nigerian Army Director of Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu, has acknowledged the incident, he did not disclose the exact number of soldiers killed in the attack. However, he commended the bravery displayed by the fallen soldiers during the encounter with the criminals.
In his statement, Nwachukwu said, I can confirm that there was an incident in Wushishi LGA of Niger State. But unfortunately, our gallant patriots paid the supreme price when they ran into an ambush mounted by insurgents. They stood their ground and defended our great country with their lives. We are proud that the fallen soldiers were courageous till the end.
The Chief of Army Staff is currently on an operational tour of the North-West operations theater to assess the situation on the ground and reinforce ongoing operations. It is indeed a tragic incident that occurred during his absence.
