The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is considering increasing its staff strength at its Kolkata office in response to the growing number of cases in West Bengal. NIA Director General Dinkar Gupta has reportedly given assurance about deploying more investigation officials to the office, which currently only has six officials. Insiders suggest that the ideal number of officials should be at least 20. The increase in staff is required for both speedy progression in new cases and follow-ups of old cases for which hearings are going on in courts. The NIA was recently entrusted with the task of investigating clashes surrounding Ram Navami processions across various parts of the state by Calcutta High Court. Both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED), which have separate probes ongoing in multiple West Bengal financial irregularity cases, have already boosted their respective Kolkata office staffing levels.
