Furthermore, the report states that healthcare workers and parents are not adequately trained to identify conditions such as jaundice or cyanosis in black, Asian, and ethnic minority babies.
To address these concerns, the report suggests the use of devices that can more accurately detect conditions like jaundice and cyanosis, rather than solely relying on visual examinations. This would help overcome potential biases in assessments and improve outcomes for diverse communities.
Dr. Habib Naqvi, the chief executive of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, emphasized the need for addressing the limitations in visual examinations, including the Apgar scores, which may disadvantage babies with darker skin tones.
