NHRA Reveals Top Contenders for 2023 Rookie of the Year Award

The NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Camping World Drag Racing Series has unveiled the five competitors vying for the prestigious 2023 Rookie of the Year award. The nominees include Chase Van Sant from Pro Stock Motorcycle, David Cuadra from Pro Stock, Eric Latino from Pro Stock, Dan Mercier from Top Fuel, and Jerry Tucker from Pro Stock. These talented individuals have shown exceptional skills and determination throughout the season, earning them a spot among the top contenders.

Chase Van Sant, currently ranked sixth in points, is making waves in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Riding for the White Alligator Racing team led by former champion Jerry Savoie, Van Sant has reached four semifinals and four quarterfinals this season, showcasing his potential as a rising star in the field.

Pro Stock driver David Cuadra has not only made his mark in the Pro Stock category this season but also joined his family in the class. Competing alongside his father and brothers, Cuadra made his Pro Stock debut at the Four-Wide race in Charlotte, where the Cuadra family formed a formidable force.

Hailing from Port Perry, Ontario, Eric Latino represents the KB Titan Racing team and is also a co-owner of the team. Latino made his NHRA Pro Stock debut in Norwalk this season and has already qualified for six NHRA races, displaying his skill and determination in the highly competitive field.

Dan Mercier, a Top Fuel driver from Saint-Michel, Quebec, has shown great promise in his debut season. Qualifying for six national events, Mercier secured a round win over Top Fuel veteran Doug Kalitta at the Norwalk race, proving his ability to compete against some of the best.

Jerry Tucker competes for Pro Stock giant Elite Motorsports and has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the season. Qualifying for all Pro Stock events this year, Tucker has reached one semifinal and four quarterfinals, earning round wins over renowned Pro Stock stars Erica Enders, Bo Butner, and Troy Coughlin Jr.

The NHRA Rookie of the Year award is not only based on performance on the racetrack but also takes into account the candidates’ off-track activities, participation in NHRA promotions, and relationships with fans, sponsors, and media. The winner will be determined by a voting system conducted by leading auto racing journalists.
