Students and alumni of the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in Beaconsfield have expressed their disappointment and frustration after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited the institution for a tour. The visit, which took place on January 22, drew criticism from individuals associated with the prestigious school who felt that hosting a member of the conservative government was inappropriate due to their perceived lack of support for the arts and higher education.

Director of the NFTS, Jon Wardle, commended Sunak for his enthusiasm and passion for the creative industries. However, his sentiment was not shared by others connected to the school, as they took to the NFTS’ Instagram page to voice their displeasure. Among them was cinematographer and alumnus Adam Barnett, who described the visit as really disappointing. Barnett criticized the conservative government for supposedly neglecting the arts and higher education over the past 13 years. He argued that art should play the role of holding the powerful accountable rather than inviting them for a tour.

Other individuals echoed Barnett’s sentiments in the comments, with Levi Scott labeling the visit a grossly offensive PR stunt. Marie Newton questioned the appropriateness of the decision, citing the lack of governmental support for the industry during recent strikes. Luke Predeth, a student of the school, expressed shame and disappointment, believing that the visit did not reflect the values cherished by those in the creative field.

During his visit, Sunak stood against a backdrop of stormy CGI skies and praised the film and television sector in the UK as a powerhouse industry that should be celebrated and supported. He acknowledged the sector’s significant economic contributions and expressed the importance of nurturing and training the next generation of talented individuals.

The UK government had previously announced a £77 million funding boost for the creative industries in June 2023, with a broader aim of growing the sector by £50 billion and creating one million more jobs by 2030.

The reaction to Sunak’s visit highlights the ongoing tension between the conservative government and individuals within the arts and higher education sectors. Critics believe that the government’s policies have undermined and neglected these areas, leading to frustration and disappointment among students and alumni.

This discontent raises questions about the role of politics within the creative industries and the need for a supportive environment that encourages artistic expression and growth. As debates continue, it remains to be seen how the government will address the concerns raised by those within the industry and work towards fostering a more productive relationship between politics and the arts.
