The son of NFL legend Ray Lewis, Ray Lewis III, passed away due to an accidental drug overdose at the age of 28. According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Lewis III was found naked and unresponsive in his room when authorities received a call at around 5:30 p.m. on June 14. A blue tablet, possibly Alprazolam, a sedative used to treat anxiety and panic attacks, was found near his body. Police also discovered a used needle and small plastic bag inside an empty beer can. Despite efforts to revive him, Lewis III was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Florida cops who responded to the call found Lewis III lying naked between a bed and a wall. A friend who was present had performed CPR before authorities administered Narcan, a drug used to treat opiate overdoses, but it was to no avail. The college athlete, who had recently been focusing on his music career after attempting to follow in his NFL father’s footsteps and play college football, had just celebrated his birthday on June 5.
Lewis III was an excellent football player during his time at Lake Mary Prep in Florida, where he finished his senior year with 1,898 yards and 20 touchdowns. He later began his collegiate career at Miami (Fla.), Coastal Carolina, and ultimately Virginia Union. During the 2021-22 season, he played in seven games with the Wyoming Mustangs of the Champions Indoor Football League.
His sudden death has devastated his loved ones, with his brother Rahsaan expressing his grief on Instagram, saying, Really can’t believe I’m even typing this but RIP big brother. A true angel. I pray your at peace now because I know how much you was really hurting.
Lewis III is survived by his five siblings, including Rayshad Lewis, a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. His family and friends have paid tribute to him on social media, sharing memories and expressing their love for him. The Virginia Union University community is also mourning his loss and praying for his family.
Ray Lewis, the father of Ray Lewis III, is a former NFL star and Hall of Famer who played for the Baltimore Ravens for 17 years. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest middle linebackers in NFL history.
