NFL Legend Dick Butkus Passes Away at 80
Dick Butkus, a renowned figure in the National Football League (NFL), has sadly passed away at the age of 80, as announced by the Chicago Bears on Thursday. As a middle linebacker, Butkus left an indelible mark on the game and was honored with a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his illustrious nine-year career that began in 1965. Considered one of the fiercest linebackers to ever play the game, Butkus was known for delivering bone-crushing hits. Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones once described him as a maniac and a well-conditioned animal. Butkus aimed to make a statement with every tackle, wanting his opponents to know they had been hit hard and by him.
His impact on the field was exemplified in a game during the 1970 season against the rival Green Bay Packers. Butkus, alongside teammate Willie Holman, hit Packers’ quarterback Bart Starr so forcefully that Starr lost his helmet and walked towards the wrong bench, dazed and disoriented.
Throughout his career, Butkus achieved numerous accolades. He was selected to the Pro Bowl eight out of his nine seasons, but unfortunately, a chronic knee injury abruptly ended his playing days at the mere age of 31 in 1974.

Born in Chicago, Butkus’s football journey began at Chicago Vocational High School, where he earned the high school player of the year award during his junior year. He continued his football career at the University of Illinois, where he excelled both as a center and linebacker. He played a pivotal role in leading the Fighting Illini to an 8-1-1 record and a victorious Rose Bowl campaign in 1963. Butkus’s outstanding senior season secured him a place in the All-America team and a third-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting.
Selected as the third overall pick by the Bears in the 1965 NFL draft, Butkus faced the daunting task of filling the shoes of Hall of Fame linebacker Bill George. Yet, he quickly proved his exceptional abilities on the field, setting career highs in interceptions and fumble recoveries during his rookie season.
While Butkus only experienced two winning seasons throughout his time with the Bears and never made it to the playoffs, he remained a steadfast supporter of the franchise even after his retirement. Last year, he delighted fans by taking over the team’s social media account for an evening.
Beyond his football career, Butkus found success in the world of television, appearing in commercials and showcasing his acting skills in various films during the 1970s and ’80s. He also ventured into sports broadcasting, serving as a color analyst for Bears games.
