The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced the finalists for its class of 2023, and the list includes three notable candidates. Randy Gradishar, Steve McMichael, and Art Powell have been recognized for their contributions to the sport and are now awaiting the final vote. These individuals played key roles in dominant defenses and were influential figures during their respective eras.
Randy Gradishar was an integral part of the Denver Broncos’ Orange Crush defense in the 1970s. He made the Pro Bowl seven times in his ten-season career, earning the title of All-Pro in 1977 and 1978. Gradishar was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in 1978. He was known for his exceptional tackling skills, as well as his ability to intercept passes and recover fumbles. Despite being a finalist for the Hall in 2003 and 2008, Gradishar fell short of induction.
On the other hand, Steve McMichael was a key player in the Chicago Bears’ dominant defense in the 1985 season. McMichael played a crucial role in the Bears’ famed 46 defense, which is considered one of the best in NFL history. This defense led the team to a Super Bowl victory, allowing only 10 points in three playoff wins. McMichael’s contribution as a defensive tackle was significant, as he accumulated 95 career sacks and received All-Pro recognition in 1985 and 1987.
Art Powell, a game-breaking receiver from the AFL, is also among the finalists. Powell was known for his size and speed, making him a formidable deep threat. He led the AFL in receiving yards twice and had 16 touchdown catches in a single season. Powell was often considered a perfect fit for the vertical offense employed by then-Raiders coach Al Davis. He was recognized as a first or second-team All-Pro in six of his first seven seasons.
In addition to their athletic prowess, these finalists had unique personal experiences. Art Powell was outspoken on racial issues and took a stand against playing in segregated areas. His refusal to participate in exhibition games in the segregated South brought attention to the racial inequalities of the time.
While these three candidates have made it to the finalist stage, they will still need the support of at least 80% of voters in order to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The final vote will take place in January 2023.
The selection committee also considered nine other candidates: Ken Anderson, Maxie Baughan, Roger Craig, Joe Jacoby, Albert Lewis, Eddie Meador, Sterling Sharpe, Otis Taylor, and Al Wistert. Additionally, former Detroit Lions coach Buddy Parker was selected as a finalist in the coach and contributor category.
The Class of 2024 will be officially enshrined next summer in Canton, Ohio, alongside other legendary figures in the sport. As football fans eagerly await the results, the legacies of Randy Gradishar, Steve McMichael, and Art Powell will continue to be celebrated and debated.
