Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd. plans to commission the first unit of its 3×660 MW coal-fired super critical power plant at Ghatampur in Uttar Pradesh by November, following nearly a three-year delay. The plant got approval in 2012 and construction activity began in 2016, with the initial completion date set for 2020. However, issues such as land acquisition, Covid-19 disruption, supply of equipment, and financial problems with one of the balance-of-project contractors delayed the commissioning. The construction cost rose to Rs 19,406 crore from the earlier estimated Rs 17,237 crore during the planning stage. NUPPL, a joint venture between Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. and Neyveli Lignite Corp. India Ltd., will use boilers from L&T Ltd. and turbines from General Electric for the super-critical plant. The second unit is to be commissioned by March 2024, and the third and final unit by June next year. Coal for the around 2,000 MW project will be sourced from South Pachwara mines in Jharkhand. In the interim, NUPPL will source coal from Singrauli mines of Northern Coalfields Ltd. If necessary, its Talabira coal mines in Odisha can help with further shortages. The joint venture company does not expect any further delays in commissioning the plant.
