Newton Rams Boys’ Basketball Gears Up for Another Playoff Push

The Newton Rams boys’ basketball team is undergoing a significant roster revamp as they set their sights on another successful playoff run. After finishing the 2022 season with a solid 19-11 record and an impressive Elite Eight appearance, the team experienced a change in leadership with the departure of former head coach Charlemagne Gibbons. Barry Browner has stepped in to take the reins as the new head coach, and he faces the challenge of molding a new starting lineup.

Browner acknowledges that the team is young and relatively inexperienced. While there are some returning players from last season, many of them did not see significant playing time. This season will present a new and different experience for these players as they step onto a bigger stage. However, Browner remains confident in his group and believes they have what it takes to succeed.

The transition to new roles and responsibilities is a major focus for the team. Browner has identified several players who will play key minutes and contribute to the team’s success. Senior leader Jabez Jenkins, who has been with the team for all four years, is expected to be a strong presence both on and off the court. Tay Jefferies has also impressed with his performance and stepped up when needed. Tim Prather, who saw limited action last season, will now take on a starting role. Ted Neal had an outstanding summer and is poised to make a significant impact this season. The team also eagerly awaits the return of Zack Harden, who is currently playing football but will join the basketball team once his football season concludes.

Jenkins, in particular, has emerged as a natural leader in the locker room. He is well-respected by his teammates and has embraced the responsibility of helping everyone improve, both on and off the court.

From a strategic standpoint, Browner plans to capitalize on the team’s athleticism in the competitive Region 4-AAAAAAA. The Rams aim to play an up-tempo style, utilizing their speed and agility to their advantage. Furthermore, Browner emphasizes the importance of defense and winning the battle in rebounding and free throw shooting.

Looking ahead, the players are fully focused on making another deep playoff run. Jenkins simplifies the team’s approach, highlighting the importance of hard work and dedication.

We just have to work, Jenkins asserts. Work day in and day out and just play hard.

As the Newton Rams boys’ basketball program undergoes changes and embraces new challenges, it remains determined to build upon its past successes, with aspirations of another memorable playoff journey. Under the guidance of Coach Browner and the leadership of players like Jenkins, the team is ready to write a new chapter in its storied history.
