Newly Discovered Antibodies Neutralize Omicron Variant: Potential Breakthrough in Fight Against Covid
Researchers have made a significant breakthrough in the battle against Covid with the discovery of six new antibodies that can effectively neutralize the Omicron variant and other emerging strains. These antibodies were found in the blood of recovered patients who had also received a vaccination against the virus. However, the combination of natural immunity from previous SARS infection and the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine has resulted in a more potent mix of antibodies that can consistently target common aspects of all sarbecoviruses.
The three most powerful antibodies, E7, F1, and F5, have demonstrated remarkable abilities to neutralize 18 different sarbecoviruses at very low concentrations. For comparison, other Covid treatments like REGEN‑COV and remdesivir often require higher concentrations to be effective against new Covid strains.
Of the six antibodies, E7 has displayed the highest neutralizing potency and broadest effectiveness, even against the Omicron variant. This antibody binds to two coronavirus spike proteins simultaneously, preventing their use and hindering the virus’s ability to invade cells.
The researchers involved in this study intend to further explore the potential of these antibodies as therapeutic treatments against current and future strains of coronavirus.
