The New York Giants got a taste of what their top draft picks are capable of as they shone in the team’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. Despite losing the game 21-16, the Giants were encouraged by the performances of cornerback Deonte Banks, center John-Michael Schmitz, and cornerback Tre Hawkins.
Deonte Banks, the team’s first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, showed promise as a starting cornerback opposite veteran Adoree Jackson. Banks played with confidence and held his own against the Lions’ backups. He proved that he belongs on this stage, impressing both his coaches and teammates.
John-Michael Schmitz, the Giants’ second-round pick, started at center and played an impressive 35 snaps. He communicated well and demonstrated his potential to secure the starting role at center. Schmitz’s main competition, Ben Bredeson, also put in a solid performance at right guard.
Tre Hawkins, a sixth-round pick out of Old Dominion, displayed his skills on defense with five tackles. Hawkins has played so well that he could potentially allow the Giants to move Adoree Jackson into the slot position in certain defensive formations.
The Giants’ head coach, Brian Daboll, expressed his satisfaction with the performances of the young draft picks. He acknowledged that there were mistakes to be cleaned up but commended the players for their confidence and execution on the field.
In addition to the top draft picks, third-round pick Jalin Hyatt caught the attention of the coaching staff during training camp. Although he only had one catch for negative yardage in the preseason opener, Hyatt has consistently showcased his skills in practice.
Looking ahead, Coach Daboll has not revealed his plans for the next preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. However, he emphasized that the team’s starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, will not be sitting out the entire preseason. Daboll believes in giving the starters some playing time to fine-tune their skills before the regular season begins.
While there were positive performances on the field, the Giants did face some setbacks. Wide receiver Collin Johnson and cornerback Cor’Dale Flott both suffered injuries during the game, and their status remains uncertain. Additionally, it is unclear if other players, including offensive tackle Evan Neal, running back Gary Brightwell, offensive lineman Devery Hamilton, and defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches, will be able to practice on Monday.
Overall, the Giants’ preseason opener gave them a glimpse of the potential of their top draft picks. While there is room for improvement, the performances of Banks, Schmitz, and Hawkins are encouraging for the team’s future. As the preseason continues, the Giants will continue to fine-tune their roster and evaluate their young talent in preparation for the upcoming NFL season.
