New York Giants Add Experienced Players to Complete Practice Squad

The New York Giants have finalized their practice squad with the recent signings of four players who previously participated in training camps for other teams. The additions include running back Taiwan Jones, offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield, wide receiver Dennis Houston, and tight end Tyree Jackson.

Taiwan Jones, at 35 years old, brings a wealth of experience to the Giants in his 13th NFL season. Originally drafted in the fourth round by the Oakland Raiders in 2011, Jones has played for multiple teams throughout his career, including the Raiders, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans. While his numbers may not be eye-popping, with just 53 carries for 223 yards and 19 receptions for 260 yards, Jones offers versatility with his kickoff return skills and has spent a considerable amount of time on special teams.

Jalen Mayfield, a 23-year-old offensive lineman, was a third-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. After starting 16 games at left guard for the Falcons in his rookie season, Mayfield unfortunately missed the entirety of the 2022 season due to a back injury. His transition from collegiate tackle at Michigan to starting guard in Atlanta displayed his adaptability and willingness to contribute wherever needed. However, Mayfield faced some struggles in pass protection with a Pro Football Focus grade of 47.7 in 2021, surrendering 11 sacks and 57 pressures.

Wide receiver Dennis Houston, aged 24, saw limited action for the Dallas Cowboys last season, appearing in just two games and recording two receptions for 16 yards. While his contributions on the field have been minimal so far, Houston will have an opportunity to showcase his skills with the Giants.

Tight end Tyree Jackson, formerly a quarterback at college level, made the transition to tight end while with the Philadelphia Eagles. Since going undrafted in 2019, Jackson has played in 14 NFL games over the past two seasons. His journey from quarterback to tight end demonstrates his willingness to adapt and contribute in different positions.

Overall, the New York Giants’ finalization of their practice squad with the addition of these seasoned players brings a mix of experience, versatility, and potential playmaking ability. As the Giants continue their preparations for the upcoming season, the presence of these signings on the practice squad will undoubtedly enhance the team’s depth and competition during practices.
