New Study Reveals Positive Results: Marijuana Helps Alleviate Autism Symptoms

A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry has revealed positive results regarding the use of marijuana in alleviating symptoms of autism. The study examined 20 patients with autistic symptoms who had been treated with full-spectrum cannabis extracts (FCEs) and found that marijuana largely helped address their core symptoms.

However, the study’s corresponding author, Dr. Renato Malcher-Lopes, cautioned against the misconception that marijuana treats autism as a whole. Autism Spectrum Disorder encompasses a range of symptoms, and the study specifically focused on the core symptom domains defined as restricted or repetitive behaviors, impairment in language/communication, and social skills.

The study found that after FCE treatment, 18 out of 20 patients showed improvement in most core and comorbid symptoms of autism, as well as in their quality of life. Side effects were reported as mild and infrequent. The researchers emphasized the importance of considering the impact of marijuana on each patient’s specific symptoms, as individual experiences can vary significantly.

The study also highlighted the significance of the ratios of two drugs found in marijuana: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). CBD, a non-intoxicating compound sought for its medicinal properties, was found to have anti-inflammatory effects and reduce excessive synaptic activation in the nervous system, potentially reducing the risk of seizures, anxiety, and hyperactivity.

On the other hand, excessive amounts of THC were cautioned against, as it can cause euphoria and lead to anxiety. Dr. Malcher-Lopes stressed the importance of proper dosing and advised patients to consult with a physician experienced in cannabinoid treatment to find a balance between CBD and THC levels.

While anecdotal evidence from autistic individuals using marijuana has been positive, more clinical trials are needed to establish the effectiveness of cannabis and cannabinoids in treating ASD symptoms. However, scientists generally agree that there are promising effects and therapeutic potential in relieving ASD symptoms.

The study contributes to the growing body of research suggesting that cannabis can improve the quality of life for autistic individuals. Many have reported functioning at a higher level with marijuana and experiencing beneficial effects on their cognitive and emotional processing.

Autistic people and their families advocate for more open dialogues surrounding the potential benefits of marijuana and seek increased awareness and understanding of its diverse effects. It is crucial to gather more empirical evidence and provide accurate information on THC and CBD ratios in marijuana products to ensure safe and effective treatment options for autistic individuals.

In conclusion, the recent study provides valuable insights into the use of marijuana in alleviating symptoms of autism. However, further research and clinical trials are necessary before definitive conclusions can be drawn. The findings emphasize the need to consider individual symptom profiles and consult with medical professionals for personalized treatment plans.
