Female Mice Display Resistance to Obesity and May Offer Potential Obesity Treatments, New Study Finds

A recent study conducted at the University of California, Riverside, has shed light on the differences in obesity between male and female mice. The researchers discovered that female mice exhibit a higher resistance to obesity and inflammation compared to their male counterparts. This resistance is attributed to the increased secretion of an immune protein called RELMalpha in female mice.

The study, published in the journal eLife, highlights the crucial role of the RELMalpha-eosinophil-macrophage axis in females, which offers potential novel therapies for combating obesity. When the researchers deleted the RELMalpha protein in female mice, they found that these mice became susceptible to obesity, displaying similar characteristics to male mice. This finding emphasizes the importance of considering sex differences in tackling metabolic diseases and opens up new avenues for obesity treatments.

Obesity has become a significant public health concern, with over 30% of American adults classified as obese. The condition is associated with numerous health issues, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even increased vulnerability to COVID-19. Therefore, understanding the underlying mechanisms behind the development of obesity is crucial for developing effective treatments.

The research team used a mouse model of high-fat diet-induced obesity to investigate the protective effects of RELMalpha. In male mice, lower levels of RELMalpha were observed, leading to fewer eosinophils and inflammatory macrophages that promoted obesity. In contrast, female mice exhibited higher levels of RELMalpha, which protected them against obesity and inflammation.

By deleting RELMalpha in female mice, the researchers were able to effectively eliminate the protective effects against obesity. However, the study also revealed a potential therapeutic approach to combating obesity in female mice. Treating these mice with eosinophils or reintroducing RELMalpha helped reduce obesity, highlighting promising targets for future anti-obesity therapies.

It is worth noting that while RELMalpha deficiency in males also had significant effects, these effects were less pronounced compared to females. The disparity in RELMalpha levels between genders likely contributes to this difference in susceptibility to obesity.

Lead researcher Meera G. Nair, an associate professor of biomedical sciences, emphasized the novel contribution of this study in unraveling the role of RELMalpha in modulating metabolic and inflammatory responses specific to diet-induced obesity, particularly in females.

The findings of this study bring to light the critical RELMalpha-eosinophil-macrophage axis as a protective mechanism against obesity in females. By promoting these pathways, researchers hope to develop innovative therapies to combat obesity effectively.

Further exploration of these sex-specific differences and their underlying mechanisms could provide valuable insights into the development of personalized treatments for obesity and related metabolic disorders.

This study serves as a reminder of the importance of considering sex differences in medical research. By understanding how males and females respond differently to various diseases, researchers can develop tailored treatments that improve patient outcomes.
