Sabah-Sulawesi Ferry Service Starts

The opening of a new sea transport route between Tanjung Silopo in West Sulawesi, Indonesia, and Lahad Datu is expected to bring positive impacts for both countries. This development comes as families in Indonesia with members working in Sabah will now have an easier way to travel, while Malaysians in Sabah can explore the beautiful holiday destinations in Sulawesi. The ferry service will initially operate twice a month, with an evaluation planned after six months to determine if the trial period should be extended. The three-day journey will provide an exciting opportunity for tourists and locals alike to experience the convenience and charm of traveling by sea.

District Officer Firuz Idzualdeen Mohd Dzul has announced that the Government has approved the application by KM Cattleya Express cruise to operate along this route. If the ferry service receives a good response and demonstrates positive impacts on both sides, there is a possibility of extending the service further. Currently, the frequency of trips will be subject to a schedule determined by the Malaysian and Indonesian authorities. This will enable tourists who wish to visit Sabah or Malaysians interested in exploring Indonesia to utilize the new ferry service.

The inaugural voyage took place on Wednesday and was accompanied by a delegation of 93 members led by the Bupati (District Head) of Polewali Mandar at Sulawesi Tengah, Andi Ibrahim Masdar. The arrival of the ferry at Sabah Port Jetty at 8 am marked a significant milestone in the efforts made by both parties over the past six years. Andi Ibrahim Masdar expressed his enthusiasm for the new service, noting that families in Indonesia will now have the opportunity to easily visit their loved ones in Sabah. He also highlighted the positive impact on the people-to-people relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia.

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the district office has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved. A committee has been established to prepare for any potential increase in COVID-19 cases, and all necessary precautions will be implemented, including close monitoring by the Ministry of Health (KKM) of each ferry arrival.

The introduction of the Sabah-Sulawesi ferry service is an exciting development that opens up new possibilities for travel and tourism between Indonesia and Malaysia. It is expected to boost economic and cultural exchanges, foster closer ties between the two nations, and create opportunities for shared experiences and mutual growth. As the ferry service embarks on its maiden voyage, both countries eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes that will arise from this new sea transport route.
