Millions of older adults in the United States may soon have the opportunity to receive vaccines against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a virus known for its impact on older lungs. However, a recent poll conducted by the University of Michigan reveals that many older adults are unaware of the new RSV vaccines and show little interest in getting vaccinated.

According to the poll data gathered in July from the National Poll on Healthy Aging, 52% of individuals between the ages of 60 and 80 had heard about the arrival of the new RSV vaccines. Of those interviewed, 21% expressed a strong interest in getting vaccinated, while 43% stated they were somewhat interested.

It is crucial for older adults to protect themselves against RSV, as the virus poses the greatest danger to individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, immune system conditions, diabetes, and those residing in nursing homes or other group settings. Surprisingly, only 41% of older adults who rated their health as fair or poor had heard of the RSV vaccine, compared to 53% of those who considered their health to be good or excellent.

Meanwhile, over 65% of individuals with chronic health conditions expressed a keen interest in receiving the RSV vaccine, regardless of whether they were initially aware of its existence. The risk of RSV infection increases with age, and this was reflected in the poll results. Among respondents in their 70s, 70% expressed strong or moderate interest in getting vaccinated, while the figure stood at 60% for those in their 60s.

Preeti Malani, M.D., a senior advisor to the University of Michigan poll with expertise in geriatrics and infectious diseases, emphasized the need for targeted outreach and awareness-building efforts by public health officials, primary care providers, and pharmacies. Dr. Malani stated, We found an association between awareness and interest, with 68% of those who had heard of the vaccine showing a strong or moderate interest in getting vaccinated, compared to 60% who had not heard of the vaccine until the poll team informed them.

As the first RSV season with a vaccine available for older adults approaches, it is essential to improve awareness to ensure higher vaccination rates. By addressing the knowledge gaps and targeting different age groups and health conditions, public health campaigns can encourage more older adults to take advantage of the new RSV vaccines and protect themselves from this respiratory infection.

In conclusion, the University of Michigan poll indicates that although millions of older adults may soon have access to RSV vaccines, nearly half of them are unaware of their existence. Public health efforts must focus on increasing awareness and addressing different demographics’ needs to ensure widespread adoption of the new RSV vaccines.
