A film based on the famous Kanhaiya Lal murder case in Udaipur, Rajasthan is reportedly in talks with the family members of the deceased. Movies based on true stories have become a successful formula in the film industry, and films based on real-life incidents have a way of evoking strong emotions from the audience.
Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, was hacked to death inside his shop in Udaipur in broad daylight on June 28 last year, for allegedly posting content in support of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Nupur Sharma. The beheading caused public outrage across the country.
Yash, Kanhaiya Lal’s son, received a call from Mumbai’s company named Jani Firefox, and director Amit Jani of the film spoke to him about making a film about the Kanhaiya Lal murder case. The film could be named Udaipur Files, according to Yash, and the family is supporting the decision.
An official announcement from the makers is still awaited, but Director Amit Jani may be arriving in Udaipur on June 28, which marks the first death anniversary of Kanhaiya Lal.
Following the incident, police arrested the two accused who had posted a video on social media boasting about the beheading and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s life. The assailants, Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, identified themselves in the video.
Notably, Kanhaiya had filed a complaint with the police about receiving threats. The victim reportedly had recently shared a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson who had made controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad.
The film’s possibility is yet to be confirmed, but it could bring more attention to the case and provide insight into an event that has created public outrage and raised concerns about the dangers of social media content.
