New Jersey Launches AI Task Force to Lead Technological Innovation and Ensure Ethical AI Use

Governor Phil Murphy has announced the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force in New Jersey, underscoring the state’s commitment to leading in technological innovation. This task force will be responsible for closely examining emerging AI technologies, assessing their impact on society, and providing guidance on promoting ethical applications of AI.

With AI rapidly evolving, numerous companies and startups in New Jersey find themselves at the forefront of this technology revolution. The state aims to ensure that AI is utilized fairly and to the advantage of all its residents.

Governor Murphy emphasized New Jersey’s historical significance in technological innovation and its aspirations in the field of AI. He stressed the necessity of understanding both the benefits and challenges posed by AI, and highlighted the crucial role of the Task Force in driving innovation while safeguarding civil liberties.

In addition, the state has announced a groundbreaking initiative to educate its workforce about AI. The training program, a collaboration between the New Jersey Office of Innovation and InnovateUS, is set to be implemented in the near future.

Beth Simone Noveck, the State’s Chief Innovation Officer, recognized the transformative potential of AI, particularly in delivering government services. She expressed her eagerness to invest in the state’s public workforce, equipping them with the necessary skills to harness AI for the public good.

The AI Task Force will be led by multiple co-chairs, including top officials from various state departments. Governor Murphy also has the authority to expand the task force membership. Key industry, academic, and government stakeholders will be consulted for their input and recommendations.

Chris Rein, New Jersey’s Chief Technology Officer, conveyed his enthusiasm about being part of this initiative. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to AI, with a focus on security, data privacy, equitable access, and the elimination of biases.

Tim Sullivan, CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, applauded the governor’s proactive approach to AI. He emphasized New Jersey’s strong positioning to lead in AI, given its legacy of innovation and a robust technology talent pool.

Apart from the AI Task Force, specific roles have been designated to multiple state departments to advance New Jersey’s AI objectives. For example, the Economic Development Authority will explore AI’s potential in accelerating economic growth and job creation. Meanwhile, the Office of Information Technology is responsible for formulating a policy for AI’s application across Executive Branch departments.

The Task Force will commence its operations shortly after its members are appointed and is expected to present its findings and recommendations to the Governor within a year. The findings will be made accessible to both the Legislature and the general public.
