The New Jersey Jackals, a professional baseball team, has relocated to Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, bringing numerous benefits to the city’s youth, economy, and baseball legacy. This strategic move, which initially faced resistance, has now turned into a major win for Paterson.

When Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh met with Al Dorso, the owner of the New Jersey Jackals, in 2017, he shared his vision of reviving Hinchliffe Stadium and making it the team’s new home if elected. However, Dorso initially rejected the idea. But now, five years later, the Jackals have bid farewell to Yogi Berra Stadium and embraced Hinchliffe Stadium as their new base of operations.

The relocation of the team to Paterson has had a significant positive impact on the city. A majority of the game-day employees are Patersonians, including ushers, team store employees, security personnel, and concessions staff. This has created employment opportunities within the local community, allowing individuals to live and work in the same area.

Furthermore, the presence of the New Jersey Jackals has opened doors for Paterson’s youth to engage with baseball. In June, Major League Baseball organized a free baseball clinic for the city’s kids, while the New York Yankees hosted a similar event in July. These initiatives aim to introduce more young individuals to the sport and encourage their participation.

Another advantage of having the team in Paterson is that it provides an affordable opportunity for families to experience professional baseball played in a historic stadium. Many children whose parents may not be able to afford tickets to Mets or Yankees games can now witness the sport firsthand at Hinchliffe Stadium. The New Jersey Jackals also enhance the experience by organizing fireworks displays, featuring an animated mascot, and allowing youth to run the bases after each game.

In addition to these opportunities, the team actively contributes to the local community. They have installed a batting cage for children to use on the field, offer discounted tickets for Paterson students and children attending summer camps, and have even provided game tickets to students from PS #2 during a visit to City Hall. Paterson’s major investor, Charles Florio, purchased 500 tickets for a game and donated them to local boys and girls who play in little leagues. Moreover, the President of the Passaic County Central Labor Council, Tom Kelly, had his union purchase tickets for an upcoming game, which will be gifted to over 100 children from a local church.

The New Jersey Jackals also demonstrate their appreciation for Paterson’s history and diversity. They dedicate special days to honor local legends such as Larry Doby, and recognize the city’s large Dominican population through themed nights. Additionally, the team wears jerseys with Silk City emblazoned on them, celebrating Paterson’s historical nickname.

The revival of Hinchliffe Stadium and the arrival of the New Jersey Jackals marks a significant milestone for Paterson. The efforts made to restore this iconic venue have not only brought professional baseball back to the city but have also revitalized the community, provided employment opportunities, and inspired the next generation of baseball enthusiasts. Mayor Sayegh aptly describes Hinchliffe Stadium as the Real Field of Dreams, where the Jackals now call home, delivering a resounding home run for Paterson.
