Seven Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigades in Western Victoria have received new heavy tankers ahead of the upcoming fire season. The Andrews Labor Government has invested $3.2 million to enhance firefighting capabilities in the region. The Buninyong Fire Brigade recently welcomed the heavy tankers, and Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes visited the brigade to officially hand them over. The new tankers have several features that improve firefighter efficiency and safety. These include a front water cannon that can be operated from the cabin, more cabin space, and an electronic hose reel. The vehicles also have a higher percentage of recyclable materials, a 4000-litre water tank, and improved crew and vehicle roll over and burn-over protection. The seven brigades receiving the heavy tankers are supported by 471 volunteers and have already responded to nearly 570 incidents this year.
Moreover, the firefighting capabilities in remote rural areas with open grasslands will be significantly bolstered by the addition of a fleet of 29 ultra heavy tankers. The Ballarat City Fire Brigade has introduced an ultra heavy tanker as part of the $12.8 million investment by the Labor Government. These tankers have the capacity to carry 10,000 litres of water and will be deployed to brigades in CFA’s North West, South West, and West regions. The new vehicles will greatly aid in protecting Victorian communities and supporting the dedicated volunteer firefighters. 29 brigades, including Barunah, Hopetoun, Lake Bolac, Kamarooka, Marnoo, Wangaratta North, and Joel Joel, will benefit from the deployment of the ultra heavy tankers.
