New Freezing Treatment Shows Promise in Prostate Cancer Treatment: A Closer Look at Breakthrough Technology

In September, which is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, CBS New York’s Natalie Duddridge provided an exclusive insight into cutting-edge technology and freezing treatments that offer hope in the fight against prostate cancer.

Barry Lipsky, a 69-year-old resident of Bayport, Long Island, has been undergoing regular prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for several years. However, last year, the tests showed something concerning.

Following a biopsy, it was confirmed that Lipsky did indeed have cancer. Typically, the recommended course of action is surgery to remove the prostate followed by radiation. However, Lipsky’s doctor, Chief of Urology at Northwell Health, Michael Schwartz, introduced him to a new clinical trial.

Dr. Schwartz proposed a treatment called focal therapy, which offers men a viable alternative with significantly fewer side effects and shorter recovery time.

Here’s how the treatment works: First, doctors utilize advanced imaging tools to precisely locate the cancer. Using computer software, they pinpoint an opening in a grid to insert a needle.

Subsequently, the targeted area is frozen. This process, known as cryoablation, involves placing needles into the prostate to generate extremely cold temperatures that can cause tissue destruction. The treated part of the prostate will eventually die off, sparing the rest of the gland.

Thanks to its highly targeted approach, this treatment allows patients like Lipsky to resume their active lifestyles without significant interruption.

Lipsky, who is actively engaged with the fire department as a firefighter EMT and also works as a diving instructor, competitive runner, and distance swimmer, received the news he and his family had eagerly awaited. He was declared cancer-free this summer.

Medical professionals are encouraging all men to begin PSA prostate testing once they reach the age of 40.

This groundbreaking freezing treatment provides new hope for patients battling prostate cancer. By specifically targeting cancer cells and minimizing damage to healthy tissue, focal therapy offers a compelling alternative to traditional approaches. The shorter recovery time and reduced side effects make it an attractive option for many men facing this diagnosis.

Further research and clinical trials are ongoing to refine the freezing treatment and expand its availability to a larger patient population. The results of such studies will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of prostate cancer treatment.

As September sheds light on Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, it is crucial to raise awareness about the importance of regular screenings and to explore innovative treatment options. With advancements in medical technology, breakthroughs like focal therapy provide newfound optimism in the fight against prostate cancer, giving patients like Lipsky a chance at a cancer-free future.
