New EVs Hit Indian Market in 2023: Affordable Options to Ultra-Luxury Models

India’s passenger electric vehicle market witnessed a wave of exciting launches in 2023, offering a range of options from affordable to ultra-luxury models. With prices ranging from Rs 7.98 lakh to Rs 2.99 crore (ex-showroom), here’s a quick overview of the top EV launches of the year.

MG introduced the Comet, which not only holds the title for being the most affordable on the list but is also the smallest. Priced between Rs 7.98 lakh and Rs 9.98 lakh (ex-showroom), the Comet boasts a 17.3 kWh battery pack that provides a claimed range of 230 km. However, it lacks fast charging capabilities and takes up to 7 hours to fully charge with a 3.3 kW charger.

French automaker Citroen made its entry into the affordable EV space with the launch of the eC3. Based on the C3 hatchback, the eC3 comes with a price tag ranging from Rs 11.61 lakh to Rs 12.79 lakh (ex-showroom). Equipped with a 29.2 kWh battery pack, it offers an ARAI range of 320 km and a power output of 56 bhp and 143 Nm of peak torque.

Mahindra introduced the XUV400 to compete with the Tata Nexon EV. With prices ranging from Rs 15.99 lakh to Rs 19.39 lakh (ex-showroom), the XUV400 offers two battery pack options: 34.5 kWh and 39.5 kWh. It boasts an impressive claimed range of 456 km, making it a compelling choice for customers.

The best-selling EV in India, Nexon EV, received a significant update. It now falls within the price range of Rs 14.74 lakh to Rs 19.94 lakh (ex-showroom) and is available in two battery options. The higher-end battery option provides a claimed range of 465 km, solidifying its position as a popular choice among EV enthusiasts.

Hyundai made a splash at the Auto Expo with the introduction of the Ioniq 5, priced at Rs 45.95 lakh (ex-showroom). This model features a 72.6 kWh battery pack, rear-wheel drive setup, and delivers 214 hp and 350 Nm of torque. With an ARAI-certified range of 631 km, the Ioniq 5 garnered attention during its debut.

Volvo unveiled the C40 Recharge, available for Rs 62.95 lakh (ex-showroom). Equipped with a 78 kWh battery, it offers a claimed range of 530 km. This dual-motor all-wheel drive car can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.7 seconds, making it an exciting addition to the EV market.

BMW made its mark with the launch of the iX1, priced at Rs 66.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Featuring a 66.4 kWh battery pack and an all-wheel drive setup, the iX1 boasts a claimed range of 440 km, along with 309 bhp and 494 Nm of peak torque.

Audi’s Q8 and Q8 e-tron Sportback also received an update, with prices ranging from Rs 1.14 crore to Rs 1.26 crore and Rs 1.18 crore to Rs 1.31 crore, respectively (ex-showroom). Both models come with a dual-motor setup and Audi’s Quattro AWD system, offering a WLTP range of up to 600 km.

BMW started the year on a high note with the launch of its flagship electric car, the i7. Priced between Rs 2.03 crore and Rs 2.50 crore (ex-showroom), it features a 101.7 kWh battery pack. Additionally, the performance-oriented M variant boasts 642 bhp and 1015 Nm of peak torque, with a certified range of 625 km.

Adding a touch of luxury to the EV market, the high-end manufacturer Eletre made its India entry with a range-topping EV. Priced between Rs 2.55 crore and Rs 2.99 crore (ex-showroom), the Eletre offers two powertrain options, with the top-spec version delivering 906 hp, 985 Nm of peak torque, and a claimed range of up to 600 km.

With a diverse array of options, the EV market in India experienced a significant boost in 2023, catering to various budgets and preferences. As electric vehicles continue to gain popularity, consumers can embark on a sustainable and futuristic journey with these advancements.
