Eczema sufferers could soon find relief from a monthly jab that banishes the uncomfortable symptoms. New drug Lebrikizumab has been proven to significantly reduce the painful and itchy red rashes associated with the condition, with four out of five patients experiencing nearly clear skin. Following its approval by EU health regulators, experts anticipate that Lebrikizumab will soon be greenlit by the NHS.

Eczema, a group of inflammatory skin conditions affecting up to 25 percent of the population, can cause various symptoms including dry skin, itchiness, rashes, scaly patches, and infections. In severe cases, it can become debilitating, leading to sensations of burning and a need to wrap affected areas in bandages. The condition can also contribute to stress and depression.

Currently, dermatologists typically prescribe creams, washes, and steroid treatments for eczema. If these prove ineffective, immunosuppressant drugs may be given, but these can have negative effects on the immune system and liver. However, in 2021, a revolutionary drug called dupilumab received NHS approval for patients who had not responded to other treatments. Dupilumab targets specific proteins that cause inflammation but can come with side effects such as conjunctivitis and arthritis.

The latest breakthrough comes in the form of Lebrikizumab, which is administered once a month and has been shown to trigger fewer side effects, including conjunctivitis. The drug specifically targets interleukin-13, affecting fewer areas of the body than previous treatments. A study conducted by pharmaceutical company Lilly found that 80 percent of participants with moderate to severe eczema who took Lebrikizumab for two years maintained clear or nearly clear skin. Crucially, the data suggests that many patients who stop taking the drug continue to live without eczema.

Professor Anthony Bewley, a consultant dermatologist at Barts Health NHS Trust in London, expressed excitement about the potential of Lebrikizumab. He highlighted the significant impact it could have on patients’ lives, not only in terms of reducing symptoms but also in the potential for extended periods without a recurrent flare-up.

Ellen Vincent, a severe eczema sufferer from Cheltenham, is eager to try Lebrikizumab. Having dealt with the condition throughout her life, Ellen has tried various treatments with limited success. She experienced side effects from dupilumab that affected her eyes. Lebrikizumab offers hope for the future, and Ellen eagerly awaits its approval.

With the NHS expected to greenlight Lebrikizumab soon, many eczema sufferers may finally find relief from their symptoms. The new drug’s ability to provide long-lasting effects with fewer side effects represents a significant breakthrough and brings hope to the millions affected by this challenging condition.
