A new landmark building and reportedly £70 million education centre for Derby city centre is taking shape with its owners saying it will soon open up a whole world of possibilities. Construction work is gathering pace at the new Derby Business School, which will be owned and run by the University of Derby.

The new flagship business school is located on the corner of Agard Street and Ford Street and is set to open for the first time in spring next year. It is set to be the study base for more than 6,000 students by 2030.

The Derby Business School will be the first net-zero business school outside of London and forms part of the University of Derby’s wider promise to sustainably support entrepreneurial growth and business connectivity in the city. It will include a virtual reality suite, a stock market trading room and creative labs. In addition, it will be used as a living lab for research projects from across the university and industry.

The university says the new complex will feature superb new teaching facilities which will build on our established reputation for inspirational teaching and research excellence, as we shape the next generation of highly qualified business leaders.

Working in collaboration with industry leaders including Rolls-Royce, Alstom, Toyota and the NHS, the university says it is setting a blueprint for how universities can work effectively and meaningfully with industry for the benefit of students and the wider city.

Planning permission for the new building was granted by Derby City Council in May 2022 with the council stating its creation had a myriad of public benefits.

Kamil Omoteso, pro vice-chancellor and dean of the university’s college of business, law and social sciences, said: The Derby Business School will open up a whole world of possibilities and enables us collectively to make a positive impact on society.

The next 10 years will see a significant rise in the number of UK and international students attending universities like Derby and our new suite of programmes in Artificial Intelligence and areas including digital marketing and global logistics are designed to provide a future workforce with relevant skills.

The University of Derby is a civic university, meaning that there is a responsibility to deliver economic, social, cultural, educational and environmental prosperity to the region.
