Netflix Expands into Gaming Realm, Beta Testing Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure
Entertainment giant Netflix is diving deeper into the world of gaming with the announcement of a limited beta test that will bring gaming to a broader range of devices. The move aims to provide an accessible and immersive gaming experience to Netflix members across various platforms.
After adding mobile games to its portfolio last year, Netflix is now embarking on a broader journey to make games playable on almost every device where Netflix is enjoyed, including televisions, computers, and mobile devices.
Starting from August 14th, Netflix will roll out a limited beta test, initially available to select members in Canada and the United Kingdom. The test will be conducted on select TVs and PCs and Macs through netflix.com on supported browsers in the coming weeks.
To captivate its audience, Netflix has chosen two distinct games for this initial trial phase. Oxenfree, created by the renowned Night School Studio and developed by Netflix’s in-house game development team, offers an immersive experience that combines storytelling with interactivity. Alongside Oxenfree, the engaging gem-mining arcade game, Molehew’s Mining Adventure, will provide a different kind of gaming adventure.
But Netflix’s expansion doesn’t stop there. The company is also introducing a controller that utilizes smartphones for gaming on TV, providing users with an intuitive and familiar tool. For PC and Mac users, the gaming experience can be customized using keyboards and mice, ensuring maximum accessibility.
Initial partners in this gaming platform include Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN devices. Netflix plans to add more devices to this list as the program continues to evolve.
