Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has acknowledged making a mistake regarding his controversial remarks, which led to opposition protests in the House of Representatives. During a speech at a book launch event on July 2, Dahal stated that Sardar Pritam Singh, a trucking entrepreneur, had repeatedly visited Delhi to try to make him the Prime Minister.
Addressing the parliament after the opposition ended their protests, Dahal admitted his error and promised to exercise greater caution when expressing personal emotions. He recognized that his emotional and sentimental nature had led him to make the controversial statement, which he now regrets.
The main opposition party, CPN-UML, had disrupted House proceedings for three days, calling for Dahal’s resignation over the remarks about Singh. The obstruction was brought to an end through negotiations between Prime Minister Dahal, CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli, and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at Singha Durbar on Monday morning.
The obstruction was finally lifted after the leaders of the three major parties reached an agreement. The House meeting resumed in the afternoon, allowing Dahal to clarify the matter in Parliament. The top leaders expressed a desire to move forward and put the controversy behind them.
Dahal’s controversial remarks had sparked protests not only from the CPN-UML but also from the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party.
