Nepal’s Older LGBTQ Faces Struggles in Quest for Equality
In Nepal, the journey towards equality for LGBTQ individuals has been a long and difficult one, particularly for older members of the community. While the country has made significant progress in terms of LGBTQ rights and recognition, the specific needs of older LGBTQ Nepalis are often overlooked, even by activists.
Many LGBTQ individuals over the age of 50 in Nepal have faced unique struggles, including forced marriages to meet societal expectations and pressures. A recent survey conducted by Mitini Nepal, a charity advocating for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender rights, revealed that 15% of LGBTQ individuals aged 50 to 75 were in heterosexual marriages. Some individuals were coerced into hiding their true sexual orientation, while others were forced into marriages by their families.
Emotional and psychological pressure is also a prevalent issue for older LGBTQ Nepalis, with 65% of survey respondents reporting living under such pressure. Despite Nepal being seen as progressive in terms of LGBTQ laws in the region, marriage equality has remained elusive. Conservative lawmakers and bureaucratic obstacles have hindered progress in this area, leaving many LGBTQ individuals without the legal recognition and protections they deserve.
The struggles faced by older LGBTQ Nepalis extend beyond marriage equality. Employment and income disparities are prevalent within the community, particularly for older individuals. The Mitini Nepal survey highlighted that 86% of respondents did not receive state benefits, such as allowances for single women or social security, due to their age, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
The combination of lower literacy rates and prejudice from relatives further contributes to the vulnerability of older LGBTQ Nepalis. This vulnerability often leads to physical and emotional abuse, loneliness, and poor mental health. Advocacy groups, like Mitini Nepal, acknowledge the need to address the specific struggles faced by older LGBTQ individuals and work towards their recognition and well-being.
While progress towards equality and acceptance has been made in Nepal, there is still work to be done, particularly for older LGBTQ Nepalis. Their stories shed light on the unique challenges they face in a society that is slowly evolving. Through increased awareness, advocacy, and support from the authorities, it is crucial to ensure that the voices and rights of older LGBTQ individuals are heard and recognized.
