Nebraska Football Coach Grateful for President’s Leadership, Excited for Future Amidst Big Ten Expansion

LINCOLN – Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule expressed gratitude for the leadership of University of Nebraska President Ted Carter and excitement for the future amidst the Big Ten expansion. Rhule acknowledged that he received a disappointing phone call from Carter, who informed him of his decision to leave his role as the university president to take a similar position at Ohio State University. However, Rhule emphasized his appreciation for Carter’s role in bringing him to Nebraska and his confidence in Athletic Director Trev Alberts, describing him as a visionary and strategic leader.

Rhule also expressed optimism about the upcoming changes in the Big Ten conference, which is expanding to include 18 teams. He mentioned that the conference will become the NFL of college football with its coast-to-coast identity. However, Rhule acknowledged that the expansion has made the conference’s schedule uncertain, as the traditional divisions will no longer exist and there will be rotating schedules.

During his hour-long chat on Husker Sports Radio, Rhule discussed various topics, including the development of the Nebraska football program. He emphasized the importance of teaching the players what it takes to win without taking shortcuts. Rhule stated that making hard decisions and establishing standards for the players is crucial in building a successful program.

Rhule also expressed excitement about the new football facility, particularly highlighting the various recovery stations and tools available for the players. He believes Nebraska will gain an edge through its emphasis on physical recovery, including the use of cutting-edge infrared therapy.

In terms of player evaluations, Rhule mentioned junior DeShon Singleton as someone who will play a significant role in Nebraska’s secondary defense. Despite limited playing time in 2022, Singleton has impressed Rhule and defensive backs coach Evan Cooper in practice and meetings. Rhule also praised Minnesota coach PJ Fleck and his team, highlighting their similarity to the traditional style of Nebraska football that Rhule aims to emulate.

Rhule expressed confidence in the potential of the true freshman defensive linemen, describing them as a great group. He expects some of them, like Cam Lenhardt, to contribute in the upcoming season. Rhule also mentioned that freshmen offensive linemen Gunnar Gottula and Sam Sledge are in contention for spots on the depth chart.

Lastly, Rhule commended several walk-on players, including wide receiver Alex Bullock and defensive back Phalen Sanford. He praised Bullock’s route-running ability and revealed that former Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson singled him out as the team’s best route runner. Rhule described Sanford as an excellent player, highlighting his contributions despite being a former walk-on.

Overall, Rhule expressed gratitude for President Carter’s leadership, excitement for the future of the program amidst the Big Ten expansion, and confidence in the Nebraska football team’s development.
