India’s National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has requested an inquiry into Fortnite and Discord, two popular online platforms, for their alleged involvement in the religious conversion of a minor boy. The commission’s chairperson, Priyank Kanoongo, wrote a letter to the Electronics and Information Technology Ministry after discovering a news report stating that a caretaker of a mosque in Ghaziabad and a man from Mumbai used the gaming platform, Fortnite, to lure a minor boy into a conversation. The commission alleges that the boy was then brainwashed into religious conversion over Discord. The NCPCR has requested that an action-taken report be provided in the matter. With concerns growing over online safety, the NCPCR’s request underscores the need for ensuring child protection policies are in place in online platforms.
