Walter Davis, a renowned basketball player and five-time NBA All-Star, has passed away at the age of 69. The North Carolina Tar Heels, where Davis played under the late Dean Smith, announced his death. According to the school, Davis died of natural causes while visiting family in Charlotte, North Carolina.

During his college years, Walter Davis established himself as an unstoppable force and was instrumental in leading the Tar Heels to the NCAA title game in 1977. Although they fell short to Marquette, Davis left an indelible mark on one of the top basketball programs in the country. His impressive performances earned him a spot in the prestigious North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and he was also named to the ACC’s 50th anniversary team in 2002.

Davis began his professional career in 1977 when he was drafted fifth overall by the Phoenix Suns. In his debut season, he averaged an impressive 24.2 points per game and was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. Davis went on to spend 11 of his 16 professional seasons with the Suns, who retired his jersey number, 6. He later had stints with the Denver Nuggets and the Portland Trail Blazers before returning to the Nuggets for his final year.

As an exceptionally skilled player, Davis secured his place in history as one of the top scorers for the Tar Heels, ranking 10th in the school’s scoring records. His 106 games with double-figure scoring are only surpassed by basketball icons Phil Ford, Sam Perkins, and Tyler Hansbrough.

Walter Davis’s impact on the basketball world cannot be overstated, with his accomplishments extending far beyond his playing career. His legacy will be remembered by fans, players, and coaches alike, and his nephew Hubert Davis, the current head coach of the Tar Heels, will undoubtedly continue to honor his uncle’s memory.

The basketball community mourns the loss of a true legend, and Walter Davis’s contributions to the game will forever be cherished. His remarkable talents and lasting impact on the sport serve as a testament to his enduring legacy. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
