India is set to launch a national mission to tackle sickle cell disease (SCD), with the aim of eliminating the disease as a public health problem by 2047. The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission will focus particularly on the tribal population who are most affected by SCD. India currently has over 20 million diagnosed patients of the genetic blood disorder, which is characterised by the presence of abnormal haemoglobin. The abnormal shape of red blood cells in those with SCD leads to blockages in blood vessels, causing pain, organ damage and other complications. While there is no known cure for SCD, as yet, the national mission could significantly improve prenatal and neonatal screening, access to healthcare services for affected individuals, and availability of SCD-specific treatments. Launching the mission could also help improve awareness of SCD within the general population.
