The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in West Bengal after an alleged assault on a team from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) during an enquiry in Tiljala, Kolkata. The NCPCR team was investigating the suspicious death of a seven-year old girl when police officials obstructed their enquiry, allegedly recording their conversation with the victim’s parents on camera in contravention of the law. The NCPCR team members were also physically assaulted and issued threats when they protested. The NHRC has requested a report including the status of the investigation, action taken against those found guilty, and the FIR registered on the Chairperson of NCPCR’s complaint. The Commission is of the view that the installation of video cameras during a conversation with the girl’s parents was against the directions of the Apex Court on maintaining privacy, and that the physical assault violates human rights.
