National Framework for Generative AI in Schools: Balancing Potential and Risks, Australia

Australia has released its first national framework for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in schools. However, experts have raised concerns about the framework, pointing out several areas that need further consideration. They argue that a more honest stance on the biases of generative AI is necessary, as the training data often reflects the biases of its creators. The limited datasets used result in the exclusion of certain voices, such as Australian First Nations.

Furthermore, the framework lacks evidence demonstrating the benefits of generative AI use in education. Experts highlight the need for research on the effectiveness of this technology and urge schools to develop procedures to monitor and evaluate its use.

The dangers associated with chatbots also need to be acknowledged, as they can hinder creativity and critical thinking. The framework should provide clarity on which tasks are suitable for generative AI and ensure that high-stakes assessments are conducted by humans.

Transparency is another crucial aspect that needs to be addressed. The use of generative AI by teachers should be disclosed, including their use in preparing teaching materials and planning lessons.

Lastly, the expertise of teachers should not be downgraded as AI becomes more prevalent in education. Teachers play a pivotal role in understanding students’ needs and are experts in teaching various subjects.

While the framework is an important step towards regulating the use of generative AI in schools, experts urge policymakers to consider these additional areas for improvement. Clear guidelines, adequate support, and further research are crucial for ensuring the safe and effective integration of generative AI in the education system.
