Alice Rolli and Freddie O’Connell, two candidates running for the mayoral runoff election in Nashville, are sharing their personal stories with voters. In a recent conversation with Freddie O’Connell, he chose to meet at Big Al’s Deli in Salemtown, a popular eatery close to his home. O’Connell explained that this place holds special meaning for his family, as they often frequented it and even celebrated his daughter’s birthday there during a snowstorm.

Although O’Connell has lived in the Salemtown neighborhood with his wife and two daughters for 16 years, he grew up in the Hillsboro/West End area, about five miles southwest of Nashville. Reflecting on his upbringing, he described how the city has transformed over the years, mentioning landmarks like Fair Park and Opryland. O’Connell’s father worked for the federal government, while his mother was a local school teacher.

After high school, O’Connell decided to broaden his horizons and attended Brown University in Rhode Island before returning to Nashville. In the private sector, he focused on computer and information technology. O’Connell became involved with various neighborhood groups and non-profits, eventually finding his way into politics. He is currently serving his second term as a Metro council member and decided to run for mayor in the Spring of 2022.

O’Connell’s decision to enter politics was influenced by a critical moment during a Metro Council meeting when it was announced that recycling services would be discontinued. This revelation shocked him, and he realized that Nashville could do better. Before officially entering the race for mayor, O’Connell discussed his plans with his wife, Whitney. Although he initially presented multiple reasons why he shouldn’t run, his family ultimately supported his decision.

While campaigning, O’Connell has made education, safety, and transit key issues. However, he considers maintaining a balance between his rigorous campaign schedule and family life to be his top priority. Although there are nights when he can’t be home for dinner or bedtime, his daughters are excited about the possibility of their daddy becoming mayor. Despite his political aspirations, O’Connell emphasizes that he is still just a regular person, surrounded by friends and family who keep him grounded.

In conclusion, both Alice Rolli and Freddie O’Connell are vying for votes in Nashville’s mayoral runoff election. O’Connell’s personal journey has taken him from growing up in Nashville to attending college out-of-state and eventually returning to his hometown. His experience in politics and commitment to his family shape his approach to public service. As the election approaches, both candidates are sharing their stories and perspectives on important issues in order to connect with voters and earn their support.
