Former England cricket captain Naseer Hussain has revealed a conversation he had with current skipper Ben Stokes about whether to declare innings on eight down. After Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood dominated Three Lions on Day 1 of the first Test of Ashes held in Edgbaston, Stokes declared the first innings on day 1 even though Joe Root was batting well at 121*. Hussain supported Stokes’s decision, saying that he sent his bowlers out to try and get Warner rather than sending his bowlers to bat. Stokes told Hussain, Why would we send Jimmy Anderson out to bat? and he stood by his decision when Root and Jonny Bairstow scored briskly to help hosts declare their first innings at 393/8 runs. Despite the early fall of wickets, England’s batters displayed exceptional skills as Australia’s score read 14/0 at the time of stumps. Warner and Usman Khawaja are unbeaten at the crease, with Australia trailing by 379 runs.
