The NASCAR FireKeepers Casino 400 faced delays due to rain, but it didn’t dampen the spirit of Martin Truex Jr., who emerged victorious in Stage 1 of the race. The event experienced an initial delay of 1 hour and 46 minutes before rain interrupted the race again after 74 laps. Following a 50-minute delay, NASCAR decided to restart the race on Monday at noon ET. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for Monday predicted thunderstorms and a 61 percent chance of rain.

During Stage 1, Truex Jr. took the lead on lap 19, effortlessly passing Ty Gibbs on the outside after the first caution flag of the day. However, Kyle Busch’s attempt to overtake Ryan Blaney on lap 14 resulted in a spin in turns 1 and 2, forcing Richard Childress Racing to retire the car.

Chase Elliott encountered trouble when his right-rear tire failed on lap 34, leading to a spin and a forceful collision with the wall. This incident triggered the second caution of the day. Truex Jr., along with Bubba Wallace, Gibbs, and three others, opted to stay on the track, hoping to secure better positions and earn stage points.

Before the race even began, rain caused a delay of over an hour. The cars initially set out for the pace laps, but they were forced back to pit road when the rain started falling. At 4:05 p.m. ET, engines roared once again, and the green flag finally dropped at 4:13 p.m.

Amid speculations regarding his retirement, Martin Truex Jr. announced that he would continue racing with Joe Gibbs Racing through at least 2024. Truex Jr., the current Cup Series points leader and the 2017 champion, has been with JGR since 2019.

Legacy Motor Club made an announcement on Saturday, indefinitely suspending Noah Gragson, driver of the No. 42 Chevrolet, due to his involvement in actions that were deemed inconsistent with the team’s values. Consequently, Josh Berry, who previously substituted for Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman at different times this season, will drive the No. 42 car this weekend.

The suspension came after Gragson liked a meme on Instagram that made light of George Floyd’s death in police custody in Minneapolis in 2020. Gragson expressed his disappointment in himself, acknowledging his lack of attention and actions on social media while apologizing for his mistake.

NASCAR also took action and suspended Gragson indefinitely following Legacy’s decision.

Interestingly, despite dominating previous races in their home state of Michigan, Ford drivers did not emerge as the top favorites for the FireKeepers Casino 400. Only two of the top 10 favorites are driving Fords, with Kevin Harvick, winner of five out of the last seven races, having the fifth-best odds to win on Sunday.

Denny Hamlin, however, is the favorite heading into the race at Michigan. Other notable mid-tier contenders include Joey Logano and Chase Elliott, who both have good track records at Michigan. For those seeking an underdog pick, Chris Buescher, last week’s winner, could be worth considering.

As it is summer in the Midwest, unpredictable weather conditions are expected. The forecast at the time of writing suggests partly cloudy conditions during practice and qualifying on Saturday, with a 40 percent chance of rain. On race day, there is a 60 percent chance of rain.

Despite the challenges posed by weather delays, NASCAR continues to navigate through the FireKeepers Casino 400, showcasing thrilling racing action and unexpected outcomes. The determination of the drivers to triumph over adversity adds an extra layer of excitement to the event.
