NASA’s Supersonic Aircraft Breakthroughs Pave the Way for Faster Transatlantic Flights

NASA has made significant breakthroughs in supersonic aircraft technology that could revolutionize air travel, paving the way for faster transatlantic flights. The concept of supersonic transport (SST) has been around since the 1970s, but commercial viability has always been a challenge due to various obstacles. One major obstacle is the limitation on speed over land to prevent damage caused by sonic booms. However, NASA’s Commercial Supersonic Technology Project (CSTP) has been actively researching supersonic aircraft to reduce sonic booms and overcome this barrier.

In its QueSST mission and the development of the X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft, NASA has been focused on addressing the sonic boom issue. Recently, NASA conducted studies to investigate the potential of commercial supersonic jets traveling at speeds between Mach 2 and 4 (1,535 to 3,045 mph) at sea level. These studies revealed that there are potential passenger markets along 50 established routes, which could revolutionize air travel.

One of the key objectives of the QueSST mission is to provide aviation regulators such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with data that can help change the rules regarding supersonic flight over land. Currently, supersonic flights over land are prohibited in the US and many other nations. The studies focused on trans-oceanic travel, including high-volume routes connecting North America to Europe, Africa, Eurasia, and Asia.

With the completion of these studies, NASA’s Advanced Air Vehicles Program (AAVP) is moving forward with the next phase of research. The program plans to issue two 12-month contracts to companies, tasking them with producing designs and technology roadmaps to realize the potential of supersonic commercial aircraft. Major aerospace developers will lead each team, along with commercial and research partners providing technical expertise.

The teams will explore the possibilities of air travel, identify risks and challenges, and determine the necessary technologies to make their concepts a reality. Crucial elements such as the airframe, power, propulsion, thermal management, and composite materials will need to withstand high-supersonic speeds. Safety, efficiency, economics, and societal considerations will also be taken into account.

NASA has already made significant progress in this field, with ground tests for the X-59 airframe completed last year. These tests took place at the NASA/FAA North Texas Research Station and verified the airframe’s capabilities. The next phase involves further ground testing on the flight line to ensure readiness for flight.

NASA’s efforts align with those of commercial space companies like Virgin Galactic, SpaceX, and Blue Origin, which are also pushing the boundaries of transportation. The future of travel, whether it be through supersonic aircraft or spaceplanes, promises to be advanced and rapid.
