Their findings, published in the journal Seismological Research Letters, revealed that roughly 80% of the observed earthquake lights were associated with earthquakes measuring 5.0 magnitude or higher. These lights were typically spotted shortly before or during the seismic events, and they could be seen up to 600 kilometers away from the epicenter.

Surprising Locations and Potential Causes

While earthquakes primarily occur along tectonic plate boundaries, the majority of earthquake lights were found to originate within tectonic plates themselves rather than at their edges. Furthermore, these luminous occurrences were more likely to happen near or on rift valleys, valleys formed by the separation of Earth’s crust.

Various theories attempt to explain the mechanisms behind earthquake lights. One theory, proposed by Friedemann Freund, suggests that the stress placed on certain crystalline defects or impurities within rocks during the buildup of tectonic stresses generates electricity as these crystals break apart. Freund likens rocks to semiconductors, which become conductive when subjected to mechanical stress. Other theories propose the involvement of static electricity resulting from rock fracturing or radon emanation.

Despite years of research, scientists have yet to reach a consensus on the exact causes of earthquake lights. However, Friedemann Freund envisions the possibility of utilizing these lights, or the electric charge they produce, in combination with other factors to forecast impending major earthquakes. While this aspiration remains a distant goal, the exploration of earthquake lights continues, and researchers strive to unlock the mysteries behind these captivating natural phenomena.
