These lights were typically spotted shortly before or during the seismic events, and they could be seen up to 600 kilometers away from the epicenter.

While earthquakes primarily occur along tectonic plate boundaries, the majority of earthquake lights were found to originate within tectonic plates themselves rather than at their edges. Furthermore, these luminous occurrences were more likely to happen near or on rift valleys, valleys formed by the separation of Earth’s crust.

One theory, proposed by Friedemann Freund, suggests that the stress placed on certain crystalline defects or impurities within rocks during the buildup of tectonic stresses generates electricity as these crystals break apart. Other theories propose the involvement of static electricity resulting from rock fracturing or radon emanation.
