Mystery Animal Claims Lives of 11 Goats in Vedarpalayam Village; Forest Officials Install Cameras for Surveillance

Residents of Vedarpalayam village in Erode have raised concerns about an unidentified animal responsible for the death of 11 goats. The incident occurred on Wednesday night within the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR). Responding promptly to the situation, forest officials have taken action by installing four surveillance cameras along the village border to monitor the area.

The unfortunate incident unfolded when farmer Rajan tied his cattle near his house in Vedarpalayam. The following day, he discovered 11 goats dead, presumably hunted down by an unknown wild animal. Upon receiving the information, officials from the Germalam forest range swiftly arrived at the village to investigate the scene. In response, the officials have issued a warning to villagers, urging them not to venture out alone at night.

What makes the situation even more alarming is that on Thursday night, around 11 pm, the mystery animal attempted to attack a cow and calf tethered near Rajan’s house. However, upon hearing a commotion, Rajan and his neighbors rushed to the area, causing the animal to flee. The villagers suspect the culprit to be a leopard and have called upon the forest department to capture it.

DFO Sudhakar commented on the matter, stating, Leopards typically bite the neck when hunting. However, all the goats in Vedarpalayam were bitten in different places on their bodies, which is usually indicative of dog attacks. Moreover, leopards usually prefer to drag away their prey and do not hunt livestock in packs. This leads us to question if dogs could be responsible.

Despite this, villagers remain adamant about the presence of leopards in the area. To address their concerns, the forest department has installed surveillance cameras throughout the village, ensuring continuous monitoring. By having a constant visual record, forest officials hope to put an end to the mystery surrounding these unfortunate incidents.

In conclusion, Vedarpalayam village has been gripped by fear and unease following the mysterious deaths of 11 goats. While suspicions initially pointed towards a leopard, officials have raised doubts about its involvement. To shed light on the situation, forest officials have installed cameras to closely monitor the village and gather evidence. The ongoing surveillance aims to identify the true nature of the threat and bring solace to the frightened villagers.
