Two people have died and two others have been left blinded in an alleged hooch tragedy in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar. The incident took place in the Pokharia Pir Mohalla area, where Umesh Sah (55) and Pappu Ram lost their lives after consuming toxic liquor. Their families revealed that they had returned home drunk three days prior and subsequently fell ill. Despite receiving medical treatment, their condition continued to deteriorate. Dharmendra Ram and Raju Ram, residents of the same locality, reported a loss of eyesight. The survivors disclosed that they frequently visited the hideout of Shivchandra Paswan, a person involved in the illegal trade, to obtain toddy. However, on the day of the tragedy, Paswan informed them that toddy was unavailable and instead offered them a dangerous concoction.

Authorities have taken Paswan’s wife and daughter into custody, while Paswan himself remains at large. The Nitish Kumar government had implemented a complete ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in Bihar in 2016, including toddy and other locally made intoxicants. Despite the ban, incidents of illegal trade and consumption persist, leading to unfortunate consequences such as this hooch tragedy.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, and a team of forensic experts is investigating the case. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to locate and apprehend Paswan, who has previously faced imprisonment for violating the prohibition law. While exact details surrounding the incident are still being investigated, it serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers associated with the production and consumption of illicit liquor.

Public health and safety are of paramount importance, and it is essential that authorities intensify their efforts to clamp down on the illegal liquor trade to prevent future tragedies. Harsh penalties and strict enforcement are necessary to deter individuals involved in this illicit activity. Additionally, awareness campaigns should be conducted to educate the public about the risks associated with consuming toxic liquor.

The incident in Muzaffarpur highlights the ongoing challenges in effectively enforcing the liquor ban and underscores the need for continuous monitoring and crackdowns on illegal alcohol production and distribution. It is crucial that authorities remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to protect the lives and well-being of the people. The tragic consequences of this hooch tragedy serve as a somber reminder of the urgency in addressing this issue.
