Muslims in the small northern Indian town of Purola have been forced to flee their homes and abandon their livelihoods after receiving threats from far-right Hindu groups. The groups affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a far-right ideological mentor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are seeking to remove Muslim residents from the area. The threats followed an alleged attempt to kidnap a 14-year-old Hindu girl on May 26, allegedly by a 24-year-old Muslim man. The BJP government has denied the existence of such a conspiracy, but tensions have continued to rise in Purola and neighboring towns. Amid reports of an exodus of Muslims from the area, a member of the minority wing of the BJP was also forced to flee the town. Meanwhile, Muslims have called for their own community leaders to gather in protest against their treatment.
