Music Journalism Student Secures Dream Work Placement at Local Radio Station

A music journalism student from the University of Chester has landed a dream work placement at a local community radio station. Corin Doolan is one of 500 students who have gained valuable work experience in various roles, ranging from presenting on community radio to operating police drones. The university’s Work Based Learning (WBL) program has successfully placed students in over 330 organizations, including businesses, charities, schools, and tourist attractions across the UK.

Corin’s placement was at Calon FM, a radio station based in Wrexham. During her time there, she got to learn about the inner workings of live radio and even had the opportunity to present on air. She describes the experience as amazing and believes it has helped her refine her skills in adaptability and working well under pressure. Corin encourages other students to aim high when applying for their placements and advises them to pursue organizations or industries they are genuinely interested in.

The University of Chester’s Enhancing Your Employability through WBL module, which includes a five-week placement in the second year of undergraduate study, has been running for over 25 years. Kirstie Simpson, Associate Professor and Dean of Chester Business School, expressed gratitude to the employers who have provided such career-enhancing opportunities for the students. She highlighted the unique experience WBL offers, allowing students to develop employability skills while providing employers the chance to shape the workforce of the future.

Employers interested in offering WBL placements to students can find more information on the university’s website or by emailing the WBL team. The university is now accepting placement offers for the following May.

Corin’s placement at Calon FM has given her valuable insight into the radio industry and has sparked her interest in pursuing radio-related jobs after completing her degree. She believes that reaching out to organizations, even if they seem out of reach, can lead to rewarding experiences and future career prospects.

Overall, the University of Chester’s WBL program has proven to be an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience in various fields. The program benefits both students and employers, enabling students to contribute their knowledge and fresh ideas while providing employers with new perspectives and valuable support.

In summary, Corin Doolan’s dream work placement at Calon FM highlights the success of the University of Chester’s Work Based Learning program in providing students with invaluable practical experience and helping them shape their future careers.
