Mumbai to Host G20 RIIG Summit and Research Ministers’ Meeting from July 4-5
Mumbai, India will be hosting the G20 Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering (RIIG) Summit and Research Ministers’ Meeting from July 4 to 5. The Research Ministers’ Meeting will be chaired by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, while the RIIG Summit will be chaired by Dr Srivari Chandrasekhar, the Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology.
The G20 Research Ministers’ Meeting is expected to be attended by 107 foreign delegates, including Research Ministers from 29 G20 members, as well as representatives from invited guest countries and international organizations. The meeting aims to discuss and adopt the Ministerial Declaration of the G20 science engagements, which will mark the culmination of the G20 RIIG engagements held during India’s G-20 Presidency in 2023.
Under the theme Research and Innovation for Equitable Society, India has taken forward the Research and Innovation Initiative (RIIG) during its presidency in 2023. Throughout the year, India hosted a series of five RIIG meetings on various themes such as sustainable energy, circular bioeconomy, eco-innovations for energy transition, and sustainable blue economy. These meetings served as platforms for stakeholders to share ideas and create partnerships to achieve socio-economic equity through scientific research and innovation.
The interactions between science and the economy are vital for social transformation and achieving an equitable society. It is important to sustain an environment that fosters research and innovation to facilitate strong correlations between these ecosystems. The RIIG meetings provide an opportunity for G20 member countries to cooperate and focus on addressing aspects of socio-economic equity through scientific research and innovation.
After the RIIG Summit and Research Ministers’ Meeting, the G20 delegates will visit the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay on Thursday to observe the research and innovation facilities at the institution.
The G20, an intergovernmental forum consisting of 19 countries and the European Union, addresses major global economic issues such as financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development. It encompasses the world’s largest economies, including industrialized and developing nations.
By hosting the G20 RIIG Summit and Research Ministers’ Meeting, Mumbai aims to underscore the significance of research and innovation in achieving socio-economic equity. The event provides an opportunity to foster cooperation and collaboration among nations and organizations to leverage the power of science and technology for the betterment of society.
