Mumbai Floods: Heavy Rains Cause Havoc, Schools Shut, NDRF Ready

Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra in India, is grappling with severe floods and heavy rains. In response to the situation, 13 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on standby across various districts in the state. On Thursday, several areas in Mumbai experienced tremendous waterlogging.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai has already received over 90 percent of its average seasonal rainfall by Thursday. The city usually receives an average monsoon rainfall of 2300 mm, and the current figure stands at 2128 mm. This amount constitutes 92.5 percent of Mumbai’s annual average rainfall.

Due to the relentless downpour, all schools and colleges in Mumbai city and its suburbs remained closed on Thursday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a directive mandating the closure of all municipal, government, and private primary, secondary, and higher secondary educational institutions.

The IMD stated that Mumbai encountered moderate to heavy rainfall from July 25 to July 26. The Weather Department reported the following rainfall figures: Santacruz 86.1 mm, Colaba 44.6 mm, Bandra 58.0 mm, Dahisar 112.0 mm, Ram Mandir 87.5 mm, Chembur 32.5 mm, Byculla 16.0 mm, CSMT 43.0 mm, Matunga 21.0 mm, and Sion 51.0 mm.

BMC officials have confirmed that one of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, namely Tansa Lake, started overflowing at 4:35 AM.

The current situation in Mumbai demands immediate attention and action as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc. Additionally, the closure of schools and colleges ensures the safety and well-being of students and staff. Residents are advised to remain cautious and follow guidelines given by authorities to minimize any further damage or inconvenience.

It is crucial for Mumbai to receive timely assistance from the NDRF teams that are on standby. The government must prioritize relief efforts and ensure that necessary resources are deployed effectively to mitigate the impact of the floods.

Mumbai’s resilience has been tested before, and it is during such challenging times that the city has come together to support one another. The authorities, citizens, and various organizations must collaborate closely to address the immediate needs of affected areas and provide relief to those affected by the floods.

As the situation evolves, updates on the weather conditions and relief efforts will continue to be shared. Meanwhile, residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid venturing into flooded areas, and keep emergency contacts readily available.

The citizens of Mumbai are no strangers to monsoon rains, but it is during these times that the spirit of unity and assistance should shine the brightest. Together, the city can overcome these challenges and rebuild stronger than before.
