The Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) has taken a unique approach to raise HIV awareness by targeting dating apps and social networking websites. In collaboration with an NGO, MDACS has appointed HIV caregivers who have created accounts on seven dating apps. Their goal is to reach out to vulnerable individuals and motivate them to get HIV and STD screenings. Those who agree to be screened are directed to the nearest BMC or government-run health center with a zero-wait policy.

According to a senior doctor, this initiative aims to spread awareness of HIV and encourage individuals to get tested. With the increasing use of dating apps and social networking websites to find partners, it is essential to ensure people are aware of their HIV status and practice safe sex.

To gather data and understand the habits of vulnerable populations, MDACS conducted a survey targeting gay and transgender individuals. The study included 8,582 gay and 4,163 transgender people. The findings revealed that 48% of gay individuals used the Grindr app for dating, followed by Facebook (42%) and the Blued app (36%). The study also highlighted that 88% of gays and 51% of transgenders owned mobile phones. In terms of internet access, 78% of gays were active on social media, compared to 27% of transgenders.

The study provided valuable insights into the preferences and behaviors of these communities. It revealed that 28% of gays enjoyed partying, while 16% engaged in group relationships. Additionally, approximately 25% of both gays and transgenders admitted to having unprotected sex.

Based on the study findings, MDACS plans to establish virtual Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTC). These centers aim to address the inhibitions shared by people on dating apps and social media platforms. Once convinced by a counsellor to use a government facility, individuals will receive guidance and information about their visit. Non-governmental organizations have helped pilot the virtual outreach model. Trained counsellors have interacted with vulnerable populations, such as the LGBTQ community, through social media and dating apps, promoting HIV testing and other screenings.

Dr. Vijay Karanjkar, additional project director at MDACS, emphasized the risks of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in unsafe physical relationships. He highlighted the importance of internet-based interventions in creating awareness and reaching out to individuals through HIV caregivers.

Since the launch of the pilot project in collaboration with the Path NGO in 2020, HIV caregivers have reached out to 84,385 individuals. Out of the respondents, 13,537 expressed interest, but only 1,166 came forward for HIV and STD testing.

Dr. Karanjkar assured that confidentiality is maintained throughout the process, and individuals ready for testing are directed to the nearest center based on a zero-waiting policy.

MDACS’s efforts to raise HIV awareness through dating apps and social networking websites are commendable. By targeting vulnerable populations, such as the LGBTQ community, they are prioritizing the health and well-being of individuals. Initiatives like the virtual ICTC centers and the involvement of HIV caregivers are crucial steps in preventing the spread of HIV and promoting safe practices.

It is important for everyone, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity, to prioritize their sexual health. Regular screenings and awareness of HIV status are essential in preventing the transmission of the virus. By utilizing dating apps and social networking platforms, MDACS is making it easier for individuals to access the necessary support and guidance.
