A section of Members of Parliament (MPs) is urging President William Ruto’s administration to address the challenges facing the smooth implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The lack of policy and a clear framework have affected the successful transition from the 8-4-4 system of education, according to Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera.

MP Nabwera highlighted the need for a policy and clear framework to guide the implementation of the CBC. He emphasized that without these essential components, it is difficult to determine what needs to be done, by whom, and when. This lack of clarity has hindered the effective execution of the new curriculum.

In addition, MP Nabwera suggested that hosting Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in primary schools would guarantee equal access to education for all learners, irrespective of their socio-economic background. He pointed out that some schools have received an oversupply of resources and teachers due to categorization, while others are understaffed and lack Teachers Service Commission (TSC) teachers.

MP Robert Mbui, the representative for Kathiani, echoed MP Nabwera’s concerns, emphasizing the need for proper planning to address the challenges facing the CBC system of education. He called on the government to address issues related to curriculum development, teacher training, and financial support to ensure the success of the new system.

Mbeere South MP Geoffrey Ruku further raised concerns about the confusion caused by recent government guidelines requiring the establishment of JSS in select primary schools. This has rendered classrooms for classes seven and eight redundant. Ruku called on the Ministry of Education to develop a comprehensive policy and funding plan for JSS.

It is crucial for the government to take immediate action to address these challenges and provide the necessary support for the implementation of the CBC. Proper planning, curriculum development, teacher training, and adequate funding are essential for the success of the new system.

By prioritizing the development of a clear policy framework, addressing resource disparities between schools, and ensuring proper planning and support, the government can pave the way for a successful transition to the CBC. The implementation of this curriculum has the potential to change the lives of learners, but only if it is well-executed.

In conclusion, the concerns raised by these MPs highlight the need for urgent action from the government to address the challenges facing the implementation of the CBC. A comprehensive policy and funding plan, along with proper planning and support, are crucial to ensure the success of the new system. By prioritizing these issues, the government can create an environment where all learners have equal access to quality education.
