A Member of Parliament affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was expelled from the National Assembly for replicating President William Ruto’s distinctive Kaunda suit dressing style. Reuben Kiborek, the representative for Mogotio, arrived at Parliament wearing a Kaunda suit, which has been gaining popularity among Kenyan leaders and politicians.

The Kaunda suit, named after the late former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, features a matching top and bottom without the need for a shirt or tie. However, Kiborek’s unconventional attire raised eyebrows in the National Assembly, leading to his expulsion from the chamber. The interim speaker insisted that Kiborek adhere to the traditional suit dress code followed by other legislators.

According to the interim speaker, a proper dress code for men in the National Assembly requires a coat, tie, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, socks, and shoes or a service uniform. While acknowledging that Kiborek was well-dressed, the speaker pointed out that his attire did not conform to the rules and the instructions of the speaker. He ordered Kiborek to exit, get properly dressed, and return to the chamber.

Although Kiborek respected the speaker’s ruling, he expressed concern about the potential negative impact on the local textile industry. He defended his choice of attire, referring to it as a presidential look, and called for respect for African culture and dress codes. Kiborek emphasized the need to promote what Kenya produces and encouraged Parliament to embrace African dress codes.

Reuben Kiborek joins a list of leaders and politicians, including Silvanus Osoro, Karungo Wa Thangwa, and Kipchumba Murkomen, who have embraced the Kaunda suit dressing style. This distinctive attire, recognized as a part of African attire culture, has even been worn by opposition party leader Raila Odinga.

The incident in the National Assembly reignites the debate about the dress code for public officials and political figures. While some argue for strict adherence to traditional dress norms, others argue for cultural inclusivity and the promotion of domestic industries.

In conclusion, Reuben Kiborek’s expulsion from the National Assembly for adopting President Ruto’s Kaunda suit dressing style has sparked a discussion about dress codes and African cultural representation in politics. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between traditional norms and the desire for inclusivity and cultural expression among Kenyan leaders and politicians. It remains to be seen how this debate will shape future dress codes and cultural practices in the political arena.
