That’s a shame’: SAPD data shows rise in pedestrian traffic accidents
San Antonio is experiencing a concerning increase in motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents, according to data from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The rise in incidents between 2022 and 2023 has raised alarms among experts in the city’s various fields. Jennifer Northway, the director of injury prevention at University Health, expressed her concern, stating that these accidents are becoming more commonplace across neighborhoods, both on side roads and highways.
San Antonio, like many cities, is grappling with the lack of space for pedestrians due to ongoing construction projects. Northway pointed out that medians and shoulders are limited, further increasing the risks for pedestrians. She emphasized the importance of pedestrians being mindful and attentive while walking, suggesting that walking without distractions and using designated intersections can help minimize these accidents.
Driving instructor Mark Alonso also weighed in, highlighting the need for drivers to stay alert and reduce their speed. He acknowledged that our society’s addiction to smartphones has led to a lack of attention to our surroundings. Alonso also criticized the lax enforcement of jaywalking ordinances, which may contribute to the rising number of accidents.
Analyzing the SAPD data, it was found that in 2023, December witnessed the highest number of motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents, with 85 crashes. In the previous year, October had the most incidents, totaling 83.
San Antonio has implemented a program called Vision Zero to combat traffic deaths, with a specific focus on pedestrian safety. By spreading awareness and advocating for responsible driving and walking practices, the program aims to reduce and prevent such accidents.
